We had looked forward to their arrival in Rosario Resort for months! Rosario Resort is located on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, Washington State. They came from near and far: Robbie from Lexington, Kentucky where he is in his last year of General Surgery residency at the University of Kentucky, Jade from Baltimore, Maryland where she just completed her residency in Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, Marco from Portland, Oregon where he is in his second year of a Radiology residency and Bekah, also from Portland, where she works in brand marketing for NIKE. Finally the day had arrived!
Rosario Resort and Cascade Lake Trail
They all arrived by seaplane from Seattle to Rosario, a lovely 20th century resort on East Sound of Orcas Island. The first day we hiked to Cascade Lake and then sailed north to Sucia Island.

Sucia Island
Sucia Island is a National Park which has wonderful, scenic hiking trails. We were so happy we had a sunny day to enjoy the magnificent view along the shore.

The next morning we took the dinghy and hiked around Sucia. Later that day, we sailed to Stuart Island.

Stuart Island
We hiked to the Turn Point Lighthouse on Stuart Island and then sailed on to Roche Harbor on San Juan Island. Turn Point Lighthouse, near the US-Canada boundary, has a dramatic views of converging sea currents, ships making the turn north or south, and occasional whales and dolphins passing by. This is another of our favorite places!

Roche Harbor, San Juan Island

Happy Birthday Jade!
Thursday, August 26th was Jade’s birthday and we were so happy to spend it with her! Especially in Roche Harbor, which has become our home away from home in the San Juans.

Friday was our last day. Jade had an exam to take so we headed to Friday Harbor to rent vehicles so that we could drive around the island. Driving around Roche Harbor, Lime Kiln State Park, Pelindaba Lavender Farm, Cattle Point, and Friday Harbor was so much fun. We wrapped up the week with a special dinner at McMillan’s in Roche Harbor.

Family reunions are always bittersweet, aren’t they? They have an exciting beginning full of energy and activity,… and then a downside, when everybody leaves and returns home.

It was a very special week for us. We miss them so much!
Love the pictures and the update! Enjoy, and know that we are thinking of you. David Elkin
