22. SV JAN: Family Reunion in the San Juan Islands, August 2020

The San Juan Islands off the Washington State coast.

The San Juan Islands are an archipelago in the state of Washington known for their lovely pastoral landscapes, lush forests and wildlife. Horseshoe-shaped Orcas Island, one of the main islands, is home to Rosario Resort built by Robert Moran, a Seattle shipbuilder, around 1906. San Juan Island is distinguished by the lively seaside town of Friday Harbor and Lime Kiln Point State Park, an orca-whale lookout. We did not, however, see any whales!

Jade, Robbie, Jamie and Marco met us in Anacortes, Washington where we loaded the boat and set off for Orcas Island.

Our Family Reunion

This was a family gathering that we had started planning since we were in Hawaii. Our main goal, as we left the islands of Hawaii, was to meet our sons in Washington State at the end of August. So onward we sailed with this in our minds as we headed north to Sitka, Alaska, then south through the Inside Passage and through British Columbia to finally reach Anacortes, Washington where we met them on August 22nd. It had been more than two years since we had spent time together as a family and we cherished every moment!

Rosario Resort, Orcas Island

We visited Rosario Resort and the bay of West Sound on Orcas Island. In each place we set our crab pots and enjoyed the fresh crabs we caught nearly every day.

Roche Harbor and Hotel De Haro

After stopping for a walk around Roche Harbor in the afternoon, we continued south along its west coast into the Haro Strait looking for whales.

Friday Harbor, San Juan Island

We spent 2 nights in Friday Harbor where we celebrated Jade’s birthday! We rented bicycles and rode nearly 20 miles to a Pelindaba Lavender Farm and down to the Cattle Point Lighthouse on the southern coast of the island.

Heading Back to Shore

Our last night at anchor we returned to Orcas Island and anchored on the east coast near Doe Bay. We had spent a week enjoying each other’s company: playing games, fishing and eating crabs, riding bikes and sailing when there was wind. The next afternoon we headed back to Cap Sante Harbor in Anacortes so that they could all return back to their daily lives the next morning.

It was so very sad to see them go.

Time together always comes to an end. These poignant words grace the garden exit in Roche Harbor.
