29. Canada: South to the Strait of Georgia, and Galiano Island, May 2022

Gerrans Bay in the Strait of Georgia.

Gerrans Bay

After visiting Princess Louisa Inlet, we headed south in the Jervis Inlet back to the Malaspina Strait into Gerrans Bay. After anchoring, we took our dinghy to Garden Bay Marina and were able to shop for groceries, drop our garbage, and finally connect to WIFI.

GALIANO ISLAND

We returned for the third time to Galiano Island, one of the Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia, this time to visit our Canadian friends, Ken and Theresa, who live there during the spring and summer. Giorgio went fishing with Ken, and that evening Theresa and Ken came to the boat for dinner after we enjoyed a vodka martini in their beautiful home. For dinner we had the fresh lingcod that Giorgio and Ken had caught that afternoon.

A very fresh lingcod!

STEVESTON HARBOR

Steveston Harbor is a fishing village on the Fraser River south of the city of Vancouver. This is where we had left our scuba compressor with the Bauer dealer for repairs last October.

As we motored towards the Fraser River, we were impressed by the amount of sediment and debris flowing from the river into the Strait of Georgia. The Fraser River drains a quarter of British Columbia, producing an annual discharge of about 112 cubic kilometers. It is the largest Canadian river that empties into the Pacific. It deposits 20 million tons of sediment a year in its delta, making it very fertile for farms and crops.

The Bauer dealer came and reinstalled our scuba compressor.

Giorgio finally learned how to take apart and service the whip connecting to the scuba tank.

In Steveston we also took a sunset walk to Garry Point Park where we admired many flowers and also watched maritime traffic still at work.
